In 2006, the AICPA published its Generally Accepted Privacy Principles (GAPP) to provide standardized guidelines for the treatment of sensitive personal and financial information by accounting practitioners in the US and Canada.
The GAPP standards provide a definition of personal information and confidential information as well as restrictions on how that information can be transferred, both physically and electronically.
Personal information, according to the standard, is "information that is, or can be, about or related to an identifiable individual." Examples of personal information include identification numbers (including Social Security), home or email address, and financial information.
Confidential information includes transaction details, banking information, and revenue by client and industry. Examples of personal information include tax estimate vouchers, K-1 forms, most QuickBooks files (since QuickBooks files typically contain employee identification numbers), and employee payroll records such as W-2 and W-3 forms.
